An Approach to Producing Space-Time Covariance Functions on Spheres

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] The spatial domain of many geophysical and environmental processes is the spherical Earth, and these processes generally vary in both space and time. Space-time covariance functions on sphere x time are developed that are flexible in producing space-time interactions, especially space-time asymmetries. The approach gives explicit expressions for the covariance functions and applies as well to generating asymmetric time-space covariance functions on flat or other spatial domains. The model is demonstrated on a dataset of total column ozone levels in the northern hemisphere.
