Inferring the Interactions in Complex Manufacturing Processes Using Graphical Models

Summary: [This abstract is based on the authors' abstract.] A trend toward modularity and flexibility in today's manufacturing creates a greater number of independent operations within a process. Identifying variation flow and implementing quality control in the resulting complex multistage manufacturing processes is challenging due to interactions among different stages. A systematic model building methodology is propose to help identify these interactions, using a combination of advanced statistical techniques in graphical models and engineering insights into manufacturing processes. A statistical testing procedure is developed to construct the chain graph of the key product characteristics. A case study validates the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.
