Shape Descriptors for Classification of Functional Data

Summary: [This abstract is based on the author’s abstract.] Several shape descriptors for classifying functional data are proposed that are based upon form analysis from the image analysis field. These are: statistical moments, coefficients of the components of independent component analysis, and two mathematical morphology descriptors. The descriptors are applied to three specific problems, and when compared with other methods in the literature, are found to be better or similar in performance.
