The Future of Statistical Computing

Summary: [This abstract is based on the author’s abstract.] Assuming that technology will have a strong influence on statistical computing in the coming decade, this study presents a forecast by extrapolating observations of the field over the past 40 years. The forecast includes both hardware and the software that provides the infrastructure for interaction with computers. The coming decade can expect three parallel developments: Large corporate and government clients will influence the design of analytical software, small companies will cater to desktop and interactive users as larger companies abandon this sector, and technical breakthroughs will introduce new forms of user interaction with software systems. Whether computer scientists dominate this field will depend on how actively statisticians participate. Statisticians will have to engage in joint research with computer scientists in order to assert their influence.
